Abstract
A pair of mandibular glands, each comprising secretory epithelium, reservoir and duct is represented in Apis dorsata Fabr., A. florea Fabr. and A. mellifera (L.), all belonging to the family Apidae (Hymenoptera). The mandibular gland is bag-like in the case of A. mellifera, whereas it is bilobed U-and V-shaped in A. florea and A. dorsata, respectively. Also, the total length varied. being 1.20, 0.60 and 1.00 mm, respectively in these three species. The secretory epithelium is only one layer thick in A. mellifera as compared to two-layer thickness in A. dorsata. However, it is a compact mass in A. florea. The reservoir wall is comparatively thin in A. mellifera as against wavy and thick wall in other two species.
