Abstract
Ascosphaera apis (Maassen ex Claussen) Olive & Spiltoir has been known from Europe since 1916 (Maassen, 1916). It was originally described as Pericystis apis Maassen ex Claussen, the incitant of European Chalk Brood of honey bee. Spiltoir and Olive ( 1955) established a new genus and family, Ascosphaera and Ascosphaeraceae, based upon this genus, since the name Pericystis had been previously used as a generic name in the red algae.
