Abstract
Polistes carnifex (Fabricius) is the largest American representative of the genus. It occurs from central Mexico to Paraguay and Misiones (Argentina), but is nowhere common. Many specimens labeled «carnifex» in collections are P. maior Palisot de Beauvais, these two species being commonly confused. True P. carnifex does not occur in the United States nor the Antilles, all published records from Cuba and Santo Domingo referring to P. major.
