Abstract
The genus Callonychium Brethes 1922 was composed of 10 described species. Four of them belong to the exclusively Chilenian subgenus Paranychium Toro and Herrera 1980. The species described here belongs to Callonychium s. str. as do six other species (Moure, pers. comm.): C. argentinum Brethes 1922, C. brasiliense (Drucke, 1907), C. flaviventre (Friese, 1906), C. luteimaculatum (Strand, 1910), C. mandibulare (Friese, 1916) and C. minutum (Friese, 1906). All species of Callonychium s. str. except for C. brasiliensis and C. luteimaculatum were described from Argentina. The genus has an ample distribution as showed by C. brasiliensis described from Ceará, Brazil (Ducke, 1907). The oligolectic foraging behavior of Callonychium petuniae on purple flowered Petunia species and the mating strategies are reported elsewhere (Wittmann et al. 1989).
