Abstract

A significant barrier to human survivability on Mars is becoming self-sufficient on in situ resources. To this end, a process must be developed to fix nitrogen from atmospheric gasses into usable materials for agriculture. Rhodopseudomonas palustris has the capacity to fix nitrogen gas into ammonium (NH4+) under anaerobic photoheterotrophic conditions.
