Abstract

The VIIRS Suomi NPP mission has 7 moderate resolution bands and 2 imagery bands on the VisNIR focal plane. The long wavelength spectral cut-off for the I1 and M5 bands are nearly identical. The specification for I-band is a FWHM bandpass of 80 nm centered at 640 nm and the M-band is a bandpass of 20 nm centered at 672 nm. This approach recognizes handling the Moderate Resolution M5 band as nested within the bandpass of the Imaging I1 band for the purposes of this investigation. This approach borrows ideas more typically used to handle overlapping observations with a common bandpass but nested one within the other in the spatial dimension. This is a theoretical study, without use of actual VIIRS data, and guidance will be provided on actual use of the idea for ocean and land scenes. The VIIRS RSR files will be used, and ideas will be tested with several typical top of atmosphere spectral responses. Conditions for actual use of this approach for environmental observations also are outlined.
