Abstract
This paper discusses several alternate designs to replace the full height sidewalls of a type 2 U.S. Bureau of Reclamation stilling basin. The alternate designs that were investigated were 1) trapezoidal shape stilling basins, and 2) rectangular basins with partial height sidewalls that allow over-topping of the walls by side flow from the downstream tailwater. The effects of the alternate designs on the hydraulic jump, wave-action, minimum required tailwater, energy dissipation, and erosion are discussed. The source of information for this paper is from two model studies conducted on the Stacy Dam Service Spillway that is currently under construction near San Angelo, Texas.
