Abstract
A recreational trail, located in Katy Trail State Park, Missouri, experienced wash out due to historic floods during the spring and summer of 2019. The wash out has become a new water way that needs to be crossed by a trail for walkers, joggers, bicyclists, and equestrians. A steel bridge has been chosen by the local government to solve this problem due to its versatility, ease of prefabrication, ability for rapid erection, superior strength to weight ratio, durability, and high level of recycled content.
The local government has set basic parameters for the design of this steel bridge. These parameters have been sent out to local engineering companies, and a competition will determine which company will be awarded the contract. A 1:10 scaled design must be fabricated and pass initial inspection in April 2020. This scaled design will be 20 feet in length and cannot exceed a height of 5 feet. Two offset footings are required for the bridge design due to the topography of the project location.
Bull Bridge Engineering seeks to adhere to principles of sustainable development. The design criteria and constraints (found in the appendix of this report) for the Katy Trail recreational bridge are meant to ensure public health, public safety, and public welfare, while promoting global, cultural, and social involvement at Katy Trail State Park. Bull Bridge Engineering also seeks to develop an economically viable option with a limited environmental impact. By honestly seeking to achieve these goals, Bull Bridge Engineering believes this project will benefit employees and visitors of the park.
