Abstract
The generally positive relationships between PAI and LAI and between mean PAI and mean leaf area are modified as leaf area efficiency decreases in trees with large crowns. Relative density indices, such as SDI, are effective indicators of growing stock because they incorporate mean leaf area as well as LAI.
