Abstract
This bicycle was intended as a method of learning and applying power electronics methods and skills. Power is transferred from a 24V battery to a 3-phase brushless DC motor. We also wanted to achieve regenerative braking, which charges the battery with the voltage produced in the motor when braking. In order to achieve this, we built a bi-directional boost converter to increase the voltage from 24V at the battery to 50V at the input of a 3-phase inverter. We also devised the control schemes that ensured proper operation of each subsystem within the design.
