Abstract

A mentally ill father takes his two children to a cabin in the middle of nowhere so he can kill them. A creature whips him away and kills him; leaving the girls left to fend for themselves. The girls are taken care of by a wraith - a young mother from one hundred years before. When the girls are eventually found, Mama become jealous - the girls have become her children. Mama is a story about a war between reality versus fantasy.

The Director: Andres Muschietti, the director and writer of Mama, has directed six films: the first one in 1999 (Historias Breves 3), and the most recent coming out in 2017 (It). He has written four film screenplay. His films are commonly known as horror ("Andres Muchietti" IMDb.com).

The Producer: Guillermo del Toro is the executive producer of Mama- both the short film and the 2013 film. He has written twenty six film screenplays, and most commonly known for Hellboy, Pacific Rim, and Pan’s Labyrinth. He has directed 17 movies, and produced 38. He has participated in and worked on a large variety of films ("Guillermo del Toro" IMDb.com).

Throughout Mama, each of the characters are shown in different scenarios. We watch the characters struggle physically, and mentally. Two girls are raised in social isolation for five years, two mother figures fight for custody of the children, and both of the girls continue to struggle fitting into society. Muschietti’s film Mama is a horror film with many jumps and scares, however the general audience and professional film critics alike seemed to overlook the realistic presentation of positive and negative effects of the various stages of mental health.
