Abstract
Radical communication is communication that pushes boundaries and questions beliefs—it seeks, challenges, and advocates. Here, we consider how radical communication overlaps with technical and professional communication to help TPC professionals come at problems in new ways. Specifically, we look at “appropriateness,” and what that concept means when applied to research, writing, and practice. We question how perceptions of “appropriateness” then shape—intentionally or not—the very scope of our field. To get at how appropriateness affects our work, we first offer an overview of radical communication, then consider issues of aberrance, gender, and violence. It is our hope that these vignettes spark discussions leading to more—or enhanced—ethical communication practices and outcomes, and inclusion of, and opportunities for, underrepresented, marginalized, and/or excluded authors, groups, genres, and topics.
