Abstract

Although the popular press continues to hold the view that the loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta caretta, is a creature whose behavior is governed by "the tug of moon-pulled tides (Burger, 1980)," members of the scientific community have been unable to reach a consensus as to whether emergences from the sea are associated with tidal cycles. Some authors report no association (Caldwell, 1959; Davis and Whiting, 1977), while others report one (Bustard, 1979; Frazer, 1981), and still others obtain results which vary from year to year (Dean and Talbert, 1975; Talbert et al., 1980).
