Abstract
Trapping, especially with leghold or foothold traps, is controversial. This controversy is measurable. Public attitude surveys indicate that a broad spectrum of American society believes these traps are inhumane and cruel. Popular films ("The Fox and the Hound,""Rescuers Down Under") link the bad guy with trapping. Many animal activist groups have regional or national campaigns to eliminate traps and trapping. Some states have banned or severely limited trap use through the initiative petition process. There are international trade issues revolving around a pending European ban on the importation of fur captured with foothold traps.
