Abstract
All of the high schools in Region One of the Utah State Athletic Association were surveyed for this study. Region One is located in Northern Utah and included all the high schools in Cache, Box Elder Counties, and one high school in Weber County.
This Region is made up of urban, suburban, and rural districts. Several central towns comprise the greatest part of the total population, but many pupils are transported from outlying areas to consolidated schools in these centers. Communities and cities range in size from villages of a few hundred persons to Logan, which had a population of 15,000 in 1942.
Originally the population of the area was predominantly English in ancestry, many immigrants from England having come to this region between 1848 and 1900. While a large proportion of those remaining here are still of such stock, the past twenty-five years have seen the admixture of other groups, principally Scandinavians and Germans. Virtually all of these have been economically independent, but urbanization created major problems which were not present before their arrival.
