Abstract

As the earliest surviving record of an urban Tidewater Baptist church, the Alexandria minute book offers historians insight on the leadership and concerns of urban Baptists around 1800. This congregation, largely white women, middle class white men, and black people, slave and free, offered its members a greater equality than they could find elsewhere. This thesis explored these strains of equality and found that the members, especially the women, exercised power within the Church greater than they could command without. The second half of this project provided an accurate transcript of this record book. Any information available on members who could be located in the public record has been included in annotations.
