Abstract
Simuliidae, usually called black-flies or buffalo gnats, are abundant both as individuals and species in many parts of the western United States. The present study of this family was undertaken (1) because of the extensive annoyance caused to livestock, wild life, and man by the blood-sucking females, (2) because certain disease pathogens are known to be transmitted during the feeding process, and (3) because the species and distribution of these economically important pests are so incompletely known in the West.
