Abstract
One needs but to review the history of the irrigated projects of the West to see clearly the importance of drainage. Since the passing of the Reclamation Act in 1902, the construction of drainage work by the United States Reclamation Service on seventeen projects located in thirteen western states represents about 12 percent of the expenditures from the Reclamation Fund. The portion for drainage has been spent during the last few years. This work has required an annual expenditure of about $1,000,000 or a total of $8,000,000 to July, 1922(1). The work completed is estimated to have reclaimed and protected from seepage about 370,000 acres of irrigable land. What is true of the Reclamation projects is true of other projects as far as the need of drainage is concerned. However, other projects have constructed fewer drainage systems than the Reclamation Service.
