Abstract

This study has been undertaken to determine the developmental sequence of the tumorous head phenotype from its first expression in the late first instar larva or early second instar larva as reported by Thelander (1950), to the form taken by such growths in the adult fly as reported by Newby (1949). Because Thelander did not determine the specific time of first expression, a part of the present problem was to determine that time as precisely as possible. It was hoped that serial sectioning of the larval forms would allow a pattern of development to be formulated and a mechanism of occurrence determined.
