Abstract

The opaque-eye mutant obtained from a white-ivory reversion experiment has been investigated. The possibility existed that the opaque-eye mutant was related in some way to a controlling element. The experiments to define this relationship were inconclusive, yet it seems unlikely that the mutant is associated with a controlling element. Additional characterization of the mutant has shown it to have a unique eye phenotype. The mutant locus was located at 50.1 on the second chromosome, and histology has revealed that the genetic alteration at this site is reflected by gross eye abnormalities. In addition, these abnormalities are temperature dependent. Wild type phenocopies are obtained at higher temperatures, and lower temperatures produce an enhancement of the mutant phenotype with an accumulation of black pigment. The temperature effect is associated with pupal development.
