Abstract

This study presents the first part of a projected worldwide revision of the osmiine bees (Family Megachilidae). Based on a cladistic analysis of the Megachilidae, the osmiines are considered a monophyletic group and are accorded formal rank as the Tribe Osmiini in the Subfamily Megachilinae. The Heriades Genus-group is recognized as an informal group of related genera within the Osmiini. Eight genera are recognized within the Heriades Genus-group: Afroheriades Peters (=Archeriades Peters, new synonymy), new status, Heriades Spinola, Hofferia Tkalcu, Noteriades Cockerell, Protosmia Ducke, Pseudoheriades Peters, Stenoheriades Tkalcu, new status, and Xeroheriades Griswold. Two new subgenera of Heriades, Amboheriades and Pachyloheriades, are added to the three other subgenera here recognized: Heriades s. str., Michenerella Krombein (=Eutrypetes Popov, new synonymy), Neotrypetes Robertson (=Physostetha Michener, new synonymy). Within the genus Protosmia six subgenera are recognized: Afrosmia, new subgenus; Chelostomopsis Cockerell, new status; Megaloheriades Peters, new status; Nanosmia, new subgenus; Othinosmi a Michener, new status; and Protosmia s. str. Chelostoma Latreille, Prochelostoma Robertson, and Ceraheriades Tkalcu are excluded from this group, the latter two being placed as subgenera of Chelostoma. Heriades aureocinctus Bingham is removed from the Heriades Genus-group as the new combination Chelostoma aureocinctum (Bingham). Cladistic and phenetic analyses of the Heriades Genus-group are presented, keys to the genera and subgenera given, and a catalog of all species belonging to the group included. Lectotypes are designated for two species, Heriades eximius Friese and Heriades heterognathus Cockerell.
