Description

This workshop demonstrates how to integrate elements of Matt Sanders’ Becoming a Learner, Charles R. Snyder’s Hope Theory and Appreciative Advising in a framework to transform office hours from Q&A sessions into formative coaching environments.

By encouraging students to reflect on their identities as learners and explore their personal agency in academic success, students and instructors can collaboratively identify how feedback enhances student identity, agency, and pathways forward. This approach fosters authentic feedback, helping students view themselves as resourceful learners rather than students with problems to be fixed.

With this framework, students stay engaged, embrace challenges, and see feedback as part of an ongoing learning process, ultimately turning office hours into academic mentoring relationships.

The workshop will be highly interactive, offering participants the opportunity to practice the strategies and techniques needed to foster this type of engagement with students.
