Description

While a kind word can improve mental well-being, a pedagogy of kindness has transformative effects on learning. Intentionally implementing a multifaceted teaching approach through kindness develops reciprocal relationships where both educators and students feel valued and supported. This session will break down strategies into four areas and highlight the profound effects of authentic human connections.

Kindness to self is at the heart of this pedagogy. Educators must prioritize self-preservation and self-compassion, recognizing that their well-being strengthens the ability to foster a nurturing learning environment. This can also become a model for our students.

Kindness in the syllabus may often be overlooked but becomes a powerful tool for engaging students. Beyond a mere course outline or contract, it can actively foster collaboration, transparency, and engagement. By embedding kindness into the syllabus, educators can create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere

Kindness in assessment is a tricky one. Embracing alternative assessment strategies should be directed toward acknowledging individual strengths and learning styles. Identifying methods that capture the diverse ways students demonstrate their learning creates equitable spaces that accommodate a broader range of students.

Kindness in the classroom cultivates spaces where trust and belonging flourish. By taking the time to know students, sharing personal experiences, and facilitating peer connections, educators can promote engagement, connection, and interest. This approach transforms the classroom into a community where every member feels valued and supported.

Weaving a pedagogy of kindness into every aspect of our teaching enhances academic outcomes by nurturing the human connections that create a more compassionate and effective educational experience.
