Abstract

The means by which animals adapt to their environment is a subject of considerable current interest. Behavioral adaptations contribute to the success of a species in its particular environment, enabling that species to maintain an adequate population level. A species-specific social organization is such a behavioral adaptation. The selective advantage to a species of such an organization has been discussed by Eisenberg (1967).
