Abstract
The rapid growth of electric vehicle (EV) adoption in the United States, particularly in the Intermountain West, has created an increasing demand for accessible and well-distributed charging infrastructure, yet limited attention has been given to how site selection and landscape design influence the effectiveness and user experience of these locations. This thesis explores how EV charging stations can be strategically located and designed to improve usability, encourage engagement, and support local economic development through a multi-criteria site selection process that considers major transportation corridors, regional demographics, Opportunity Zones, and proximity to recreational and public lands. Using geographic information systems (GIS), mapping analysis, and observational research, potential charging locations are identified along key corridors in Utah, Colorado, and Idaho, with a focus on Interstate 15 and Interstate 70. Three case study sites representing urban, rural, and historic downtown contexts are selected for detailed analysis and developed into schematic design proposals that incorporate pedestrian infrastructure, open space, and connections to surrounding amenities, demonstrating how charging stations can become active and attractive environments that encourage longer stays and increased interaction with nearby businesses. Additional proposals highlight the potential for integrating EV infrastructure into existing well-designed public spaces to enhance both functionality and user appeal. The findings suggest that thoughtfully sited and designed EV charging stations can extend beyond their utilitarian purpose to contribute to community vitality, particularly in underserved and rural areas, and provide a replicable framework for future EV infrastructure development in the Intermountain West and similar regions.
