Abstract

Palisade State Park in central Utah is a cherished natural resource, offering diverse recreational opportunities and serving as an important ecological habitat. However, the park faces increasing challenges due to increasing visitation and the impacts of climate change. This thesis presents a strategic master plan for Palisade State Park, designed to guide its development over the next 20 years.

Recognizing the need for a sustainable approach, this project adopts a participatory method, involving park users, residents, and environmental experts in the planning process. The goal is to create a master plan that not only addresses the park’s immediate needs but also ensures its long-term viability and resilience.

Through surveys, interviews, and GIS mapping, this study assessed current park conditions and visitor needs. The resulting plan outlines strategies for infrastructure improvement, habitat conservation, and visitor experience enhancement. By balancing human activity with environmental stewardship, the plan aims to preserve Palisade State Park as a vital recreational and ecological asset for future generations.

Additionally, the strategies developed in this thesis are intended to be adaptable to other state parks in the Intermountain West, potentially serving as a model for integrating community input with sustainable park management.

This submission includes two files: the complete academic thesis and a standalone version of the Palisade State Park Master Plan.

Please note that the Master Plan is fully integrated into the main thesis document. However, because this project is designed to serve as a functional, real-world planning document for the Utah Division of State Parks, the Master Plan is also provided as a separate file. This allows for easier distribution, reference, and practical use by park management and regional stakeholders.
