Abstract

Utah State University (USU) offers a successful Introduction to Landscape Architecture class for college students; this class increases awareness and understanding of landscape architecture as a profession. Though this is a wonderful resource offered at the college level, high school is a key time for career awareness. Unfortunately, there is a lack of student awareness surrounding the profession of landscape architecture. In Utah and the rest of the United States, there are currently no in-person Introduction to Landscape Architecture classes available in a high school setting to increase awareness and understanding for students in a high school setting. Providing a high school-level Introduction to Landscape Architecture class is essential to increasing student awareness; it would also give students the depth of knowledge and experience needed to understand whether they are interested in the profession. There are three main proposed objectives. The first is to develop Introduction to Landscape Architecture standards and submit them to the Utah Board of Education for approval. The second is to provide high school agricultural education teachers with an Introduction to Landscape Architecture curriculum that does not require prior professional training in landscape architecture. The absence of an in-person curriculum with completed module plans and supporting curriculum hinders teachers from offering this as a dual enrollment class. The third objective is to develop an online asynchronous class that is appropriate for a high school audience and allows students enrolled in public education to take LAEP 1030 online for USU concurrent enrollment credit.
