Abstract
Ecotourism has been widely promoted for its potential to sustainably finance both conservation and economic development (Boo 1990, Card and Vogelsong 1995). While definitions of ecotourism vary, proponents envision it as a form of tourism that: (1) caters to environmentally and culturally sensitive tourist; (2) avoids negative cultural and environmental impacts; (3) promotes the conservation of natural resources; (4) contributes to local economic development; (5) encourages local participation in the development of tourism-related industries; and (6) utilizes low technology and low energy infrastructure.
