Abstract

Salt Lake City, after evaluating its projected water needs for the next 25 years, has proposed to route 300 MGD of water via pipeline from the Bear River to Salt Lake's culinary water system. According to Weber Basin Water Conservancy District officials, this water will be available between October and March (the irrigation off-season). En route to the system, the water will pass through an area known as the "Slaterville Diversion" subsequent to water treatment at a new plant. The Diversion is currently the mixing point for several water sources. These waters need to be managed and mixed appropriately with the new incoming flow to allow treatment to primary drinking water standards at a minimal cost. This undergraduate design project focused on developing a water and mass balance model with uncertainty that predicts cost-effective combinations of these waters based on available water quality and flow data. Treatment options and their associated daily variable costs are included in the model. These options are discussed in detail in this paper.
