Abstract

Laminitis, also known as founder, is one of the most devastating and crippling conditions affecting horses throughout the world today. Traditionally defined as the inflammation of the laminae within the hoof, laminitis actually presents itself as a complicated, multi-system disease, that, through a series of interrelated events, leads to a characteristic lameness. This lameness has serious economic and humane consequences because affected horses are often seen in pain, and frequently must be destroyed due to permanent damages within the hoof.
