Abstract

Writing is a composite skill that is a prerequisite to academic, social, and employment success. Only 5% of students with disabilities demonstrated proficiency in writing in the 2010 National Assessment of Education Progress. Effective writing interventions for learners with Complex Support Needs (CSN) are limited. This Honors Capstone focused on designing an effective writing curriculum for this population of students. The developed curriculum was designed to incorporate explicit systematic instruction to reach behavioral fluency in writing simple sentences the describe a series of images. The final project includes a literature review on effective writing instruction for students with (CSN), a curriculum break-down to achieve an Individualized Education Program (IEP) writing goal, examples of corresponding lessons and sample materials used in pilot testing, and a reflection on the process.
