Abstract

In 2008, the Department of Instructional Technology at Utah State University (USU) changed its name to the Department of Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences. Like many other programs that have under- gone similar name changes, the Department first considered the idea several years ago, with the official title modification taking place only this past spring (2009). Why the need for an identity shift ? This article is presented as a roundtable conversation, enabling each faculty member affected by the name change to voice his or her thoughts about the respective fields, and the name change itself. While the statements herein do not necessarily provide full disclosure about all of the issues and interests taken into consideration with a name change, we offer the following to provide some transparency about the rationale, consequences, and benefits as evidenced by the various perspectives of USU faculty.
