Abstract

Although the recent Women in the Workplace 2019 report by Lean In and McKinsey & Company shows slight progress in some areas in terms of women's leadership, the authors are quick to state that companies need to stay focused on efforts "earlier in the pipeline" to make real progress. Yet, top leadership scholars Barbara Kellerman and Deborah Rhode doubt that this "pipeline" of women coming up through the ranks will actually solve gender inequality at all levels, and they call it a "pipe dream." Either way, hundreds (if not thousands) of studies have found that organizations benefit when both women and men hold top positions in businesses today. So, what works?
