All Unconscious Bias Training is not Equal

Abstract

In recent months, I have been contacted by leaders from the business, government, nonprofit and education sectors asking for advice about unconscious bias training. My initial response always includes, "Be careful," and then I ask them the following question: "Do you want to train employees so you can 'say' you have done something, or do you want individuals, teams and organizations to experience the beginnings of a potential transformation?" After a surprised look, most confirm the latter. At this point in history, I hope all leaders want to do the latter.
