Abstract
We derive a system of nonlinear partial differential equations describing the phenomenon of mountain pine beetles attacking lodgepole pine en masse. A methodology for projecting the behaviour of these partial differential equations onto purely local ordinary differential equations is discussed and implemented. The behaviour of this system of equations is analysed and compared heuristically with observations.
