Abstract
During the fall of 1995, USU all-sky airglow image measurements were made from Christmas Island, Republic of Kiribati (2.0° N, 157.5° W), in conjunction with long-term MF radar wind measurements. Image measurements of the Na, OI (557.7 nm), and near infrared OH band emission were obtained during the period of 14 Septemeber-2 October. A total of 46 extensive gravity wave events were extracted from the image data and their intrinsic wave properties have been determined using the background mesospheric wind data. The zonal winds during this period were predominately westward, while the majority of the gravity waves (> 80%) exhibited an eastward component of propagation. These measurements are compared and contrasted with wave data from several sites at other latitudes. Estimates of the momentum fluxes associated with selected wave events are discussed together with their uncertainties.
