Abstract
Polar mesospheric clouds (PMCs) occur in the cold (<150 K) summer mesosphere at latitudes greater than 40°. Because of their high altitude (~82 to 84 km), the sun still illuminates them from ~5° to 16° below the horizon. This phenomenon gives them the name of noctilucent clouds when viewed from the ground during twilight.
