Abstract

Using simultaneous imaging and background wind measurements from Maui, Hawaii (20.70°N, 156.3°W), during 2003, the observed and intrinsic parameters of ducted (or evanescent) ripple-like waves have been investigated. These are relatively rare events and here we show three examples and compare their observed properties with theoretical predictions. The measurements were obtained using the Utah State University Mesospheric Temperature Mapper (MTM) which sequentially sampled the near infra-red OH and O2, airglow emissions centered at 87 and 94 km, respectively, and the University of Illinois meteor radar which provided continuous hourly wind measurements over the altitude range of 80-100 km.
