Abstract
As Syria’s civil war stretches into its second decade, the regime of Bashar al-Assad is gradually reconsolidating control – if not political legitimacy – over a majority of territory across the country. Despite a transition away from active civil war, prospects for reintegration, reconciliation, and post-conflict reconstruction remain grim. For Syrians forcibly displaced from their homes, opportunities for return and resettlement remain particularly limited. Into this conversation comes Justin Schon’s new volume, Surviving the War in Syria: Survival Strategies in a Time of Conflict (Cambridge University Press, 2020).
