Abstract

My paper will examine documents from historical archives that address prostitution in Butte, Montana during the early 20th century. I will assess how the power structure in Butte conspired to keep prostitution alive well into the 1980's. By examining legislation, newspaper accounts, and business correspondence I intend to show how the document type and the wording used in it marginalized women and kept them subservient to the businessmen that controlled the flesh-trade in the Montana mining town.
