Abstract

Learning analytics is seen by some as the next bastion of hope for true personalized learning in the K-12 classroom but also requires monumental shifts in how teachers manage classroom instruction and behavior. Learning analytic data-dashboards offer to resolve some of the issues teachers face with regards to making data-driven decisions in the classroom. Through continuous assessment and immediately useful visualizations of that data, teachers are now able to do in seconds what had previously taken weeks to accomplish. Currently Utah is spending 8.5 million to put data analytics into thousands of classrooms across the state. From statewide teacher questionnaire response data, multiple interviews and observations, I illustrate how data-dashboards are transforming education by supercharging data driven decision making. I will also propose a set of essential data-dashboard features that help teachers transition more successfully into teaching with technology.
