Abstract

This measures the impact of public art on public space. Public art initiatives are often justified based on assumed impacts on use and sense of place. However, there is little research attempting to measure or predict these impacts. Therefore, this study examines many data sources in order to find a correlation between public art and improvement of public open space. Data-rich sites have been compared against their own pre-art installation state. In locations with less available data, similar sites with and without art have been compared. This varied site selection demonstrates broad effects, rather than site-specific effects. The wide site scope allows the results to be used predicatively, rather than showing isolated results at a single site. ArcGIS is the primary software used, in concert with Microsoft Excel and several other programs.
