Abstract
Communicating music research to a nonspecialist audience is one of the great challenges of music academia. This project will approach what vocabulary and depth is appropriate in transferring technical music research to the general public, specifically in music theory research. The specific research subject are chromatic chords and forms and how to help a nonspecialist audience appreciate and make sense of theory concepts not usually surveyed until collegiate level studies. research methods will include exposing voluntary subjects to excerpts, chord progressions, back to back. One progression will include a chromatic chord and one will not. The subject will then be taught what the musical importance of these chords are. Effectiveness of vocabulary used in concepts taught will be measured by the subject's ability to recall and explain learned material.
