Abstract
Understanding contribution in youth sport contexts: a critical review
Objectives
The objectives of this ongoing study are to: 1) investigate how “contribution” was conceptualized and studied across different disciplines, 2) to study what terms and definitions were used to study this general construct across disciplines, and 3) to use this information to develop a holistic, integrative definition of contribution in sport.
Methods
We performed a systematic search of English peer-reviewed literature using SPORTDISCUS and Academic Search Premier and a wide range of keywords (e.g., contribution, youth sport, volunteerism). The articles were specific to or included sport and contribution or some other related construct. Initial results were screened by article title, and the retained articles were imported into Zotero. To narrow the scope further, the articles were screened again at the abstract-level, and categorized according to their relevance to the construct of interest. This screening process is still ongoing, and will be followed by extraction of relevant data from each retained article, and finally the synthesis of this data in the development of an integrative definition of contribution in sport.
Results and Discussion
While the review is still ongoing, initial searches have highlighted that despite the prevalence of literature on positive youth development in sport, contribution remains a largely understudied construct. It is hoped that he findings of this review will enhance our understanding of contribution in sport and facilitate future inter-disciplinary research.
