Abstract

Macular Degeneration also known as MD is a condition affecting the central part of the retina (the macula) and resulting in distortion or loss of central vision. As many as 11 million people in the United States have some form of age-related macular degeneration. There are two types of Macular Degeneration. The first type is referred to as Dry Macular degeneration which occurs when the layers of the macula (including the photoreceptors and the retinal pigment epithelium) get progressively thinner, functioning less and less as they do. Dry MD involves no leakage of fluids from blood vessels. The second type is referred to as Wet Macular Degeneration which is a condition when new blood vessels grow in the choroid layer behind the retina. Wet MD occurs when the new vessels are weak, and they leak fluid, lipids (part of the structure of cells), and blood. Any type of Macular Degeneration is not easy to treat. Studies show that the global cost of visual impairment due to age-related macular degeneration is $343 billion, including $255 billion in direct health care costs. Studies show that MD is more common among 65 year old Caucasian males and females. Also, people with a family history of MD are at higher risk. Because MD is getting to be so widespread and so expensive to treat, I'm looking to design projects that are designed to help people who cannot afford to treat their MD condition. For my presentation, I will be showing an example of a poster that I designed that will be easy for anyone with any type of MD to read and understand.
