Make America ______ Again. (tentative)

Alex Geddes, Utah State University

Abstract

My project will focus on musicians, specifically rappers who are known for socially conscious music about racial injustice in America. A lot of people miss messages in these songs because of the stereotypes surrounding rappers and hip hop, while other listeners are aware of these messages, but find it too difficult to connect the lyrics to their historical and social contexts. This project will break down a few songs, and through factual analysis, I will hope to uncover social themes and provide historical and contemporary context to deepen the understanding and empathy about racial injustice in America. To execute this project, I plan to form this research into a series of posters. This poster series will all be matched with a specific song, and the topic it addresses. Each poster will also display imagery from the civil rights movement. Doing this my goal is to show the juxtaposition of imagery from the past and lyrics from the present, to showcase that not much change has happened in America regarding the social injustice to the black community. My goal is to cover a wide variety of topics about racial injustice including but not necessarily limited to slavery, mass incarceration, police brutality, and cultural appropriation.

Make America ______ Again. (tentative)

The South Atrium
