Abstract

Native American footwear is a fascinating study to many people, but that can be overshadowed by other subjects. The craftsmanship and achievement exemplified in a beautiful pair of woven or leather shoes can tell us much about the structure of Native American society and its progress from hunter gatherer up to the modern day. The ingenious design and detailed beadwork are more than decorative, they are commemorative of an entire era of past society, and can play a vital role in telling their stories.
