Abstract

I believe experiencing art is a human right. Whether it be a stunning painting, a magnificent opera, or a piece of riveting theatre, art can be educational and personally beneficial to the person viewing it. That is why I am exploring a new and upcoming form of theatre called Theatre for the Very Young--or simply TVY. TVY is specifically theatre for children ages 0-5. It is not just a verbal performance but a multi-modal one that is interactive with the young people in the audience. It includes vocal sounds, facial expression, bodily gesture and expressively animated props. Through research, collaborating with professors and peers, and the experience of producing a TVY play, I would like to have a better understanding of TVY and its potential benefits to young people and communities. I have developed a show and am currently in the process of rehearsal. My show called Alice's Garden will be a show about the fun and quirky nature of bugs, flowers, and nature in a garden. Accompanied by upbeat music and multi-sensory experiences, it will feature brightly colored butterflies, sassy garden gnomes, beautiful flowers, and of course a gardener. My show will take place here at Utah State University for a public showing and around Cache Valley at different daycare centers. After the performances, I will be surveying the parents/guardians who attended the show with their child about their general reaction to the show and how it changed their view about the purpose of theatre.
