Abstract
The suite is a common form of the Baroque era. Modern composers have used and adapted the suite form in their compositions. How do Baroque era and 20th century styles combine in modern interpretation of the Baroque suite? We will explore this question through Randall Thompson's Suite for oboe, clarinet and viola. Through performance we will demonstrate the stylistic differences and compositional techniques Randall Thompson employs in this particular piece. We will perform excerpts of the suite and discuss the larger form overall. We will examine traditional Baroque techniques such as ornamentation, the use of binary form, polyphonic texture including counterpoint and how they are translated into a 20th century composition.
