Abstract

Debussy's contributions to the French art song repertoire and treatment of poetry will be examined through a performance of two of his songs. "Il pleure dans mon coeur," a poem written by Paul Verlaine is one of Debussy's very successful songs. "De soir," a setting of one of Debussy's own poems was far less successful. Context and biographical information of the composer will be discussed in addition to a musical and poetic analysis of each song and how they influenced the genre of the mélodie.
